We’ve all been there. You have a vision, something that keeps you up at night with excitement, a goal so vivid you can almost taste it. You put in the work, you muster up the courage to step forward, and then... click.
The door is locked. A flat no. A rejection email. A sudden shift in circumstances that completely pulls the rug out from under your feet.
In those moments, the silence on the other side of a closed door can feel deafening. It’s easy to freeze, to assume that a shut door means a permanently cancelled dream. But if there is one core truth my journey has taught me, it’s this:
One closed door is never the end of the building.
1. Stop Staring at the Lock
When an opportunity falls through, human nature pulls us to sit on the doorstep and stare at the locked handle, wondering what went wrong. We replay the scenario, measure our shortcomings, and let doubt creep in.
Instead of waiting for a closed door to magically swing open, turn around. Knock on the next one. And if that one doesn't open, move to the next. Not every door will be shut forever, but you will never find the open ones if you refuse to keep walking down the hallway.
Look at the Apostle Paul in Acts 16. When he tried to enter Bithynia, the Spirit closed that door. Instead of quitting, Paul kept moving, and that detour led him straight to Macedonia, opening an entire continent to his mission. A closed door isn't a dead end; it is often just divine redirection.
As Scripture reminds us:
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened." — Matthew 7:7–8
When God sets a vision before you, remember His promise in Revelation 3:8:
"I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut."
2. Patience Is the Fuel of Persistence
We live in a world obsessed with overnight success. We want the results yesterday, the promotion this month, the breakthrough right now. But true lasting achievement operates on a different timeline.
Consider Joseph in Genesis. Sold into slavery and falsely accused, he spent over 13 years facing one closed door after another in a prison cell. Yet through patience, persistence, and unshakable faith, his journey ended in the palace, saving an entire nation.
Likewise, Jesus taught the parable of the persistent widow in Luke 18 to remind us to always pray and never give up. She didn't let initial refusals stop her; she kept knocking until she saw a breakthrough.
- If it takes time, be patient. Patience isn't passive waiting; it’s keeping a positive attitude while doing the work.
- Refuse to quit. Persistence is simply deciding that your dream is bigger than the temporary discomfort of waiting.
"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." — Galatians 6:9
With a mixture of steady faith and quiet courage, you will find a way through. As Joshua 1:9 commands:
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
3. Don't Take It From a Textbook, Take It From Experience
I’m not sharing this as an abstract philosophy or a cliché motivational quote. I am sharing it because I am a walking testimony of it.
I have stood in front of those locked doors. I have felt the sting of disappointment and the weight of uncertainty. But I chose to keep knocking, keep believing, and keep pushing forward, and it worked. I’ve seen the trajectory of my life change simply because I refused to let a temporary obstacle become a permanent stop sign.
Scripture speaks of this power in Revelation 12:11, noting that we overcome
"by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony."
My story is proof that persistence and faith overcome closed doors.

If you are reading this while standing in front of a setback, take this advice to heart:
Do not let a person, a circumstance, or a moment of doubt steal what you are working toward. Pick yourself up, dust off the disappointment, and step up to the next door.
Your moment is coming. Keep knocking.
