Most of us woke up today thinking about our "to-do" list, but we missed the most important item on the menu. Before you even had your first cup of coffee, a choice was set before you: Life or death? Blessing or cursing?
"Choose this day whom you will serve." It’s a line that cuts through the noise of our busy lives like a lightning bolt. We often feel like victims of our circumstances, trapped by our past or limited by our options. But the Word of God tells a different story. It tells us that we have been handed the most powerful tool in the universe: Agency. You aren't just a bystander in your life; you are the one holding the keys.
Life isn't just something that happens to us; it’s a series of decisions we make. Sometimes we feel like we’re stuck on a path we didn't design, but the truth is, we are constantly standing at a crossroads.
In Deuteronomy 30:19, there is a powerful, direct invitation:
"I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live."
The Gift of Agency
It’s incredible to think that the Creator of the universe doesn't force us into a specific mold. Instead, He hands us the "power of the pivot." We have been given options, and while the world often makes the "death" option (negativity, stagnation, bitterness) look easy, the "life" option is always available.
Choosing life isn't a one-time event. It’s a daily—sometimes hourly—commitment to:
- Choose gratitude over grumbling.
- Choose forgiveness over resentment.
- Choose purpose over passivity.
The "5-Second Pivot."
Choose This Day
You might recognize the famous challenge from Joshua: "Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve." The keyword there is today. You don't have to fix your entire future by sundown, but you do have to decide who is in the driver's seat right now. Are you serving your fears, or are you serving the One who gives life abundantly?
A Final Thought
I’ll be the first to admit: choosing life isn’t always the loudest or easiest path. Sometimes, the "death" option of complaining or staying stuck feels strangely comfortable. But I’ve learned that the greatest freedom God ever gave us was the ability to change our direction mid-stride.
If you feel like you’ve been making the "wrong" choices lately, remember that Deuteronomy 30:19 doesn't say you only get one chance. It says, "I have set before you..."—meaning the choice is available to you right now. You don't have to be a prisoner of yesterday’s decisions. You are one "pivot" away from a completely different story.
Pick up your keys. Open the door. Choose life.
A Prayer for the Power of Choice
Lord, thank You for the dignity of choice. Thank You that I am not a product of my circumstances, but a product of Your grace and my decisions. Today, I surrender my will to Yours. I ask for clarity to see the "life" options in front of me, even when they are hidden behind challenges. Strengthen my resolve to choose what is good, what is true, and what leads to peace. Help me to use my agency to bless others and honor You.
Amen.
