The Biblical View of Wealth and Stewardship

As a believer, I believe that wealth carries a unique responsibility: to be used for God's glory. After all, the Bible tells us in 1 Chronicles 29:12-14 that, “Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name. But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.” These verses are about more than just acknowledging God as the provider; they also emphasize a deeper truth: wealth is a tool entrusted to us.

Why does this matter?  Because true ownership ultimately belongs to God. We are called to be faithful stewards (1 Corinthians 4:2), using this resource wisely and generously.  This perspective shifts our emphasis from accumulating wealth to using it as a tool for God's purposes.

As stewards of God's blessings, our responsibility extends beyond simply avoiding waste. We are called to use our wealth as an expression of His love and generosity.  The Bible says in Proverbs 21:13, "Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor will himself cry out and not be heard." By helping those in need, we not only extend a helping hand, but also reflect the very compassion of God himself (James 2:14-17).

When we open our hearts and wallets to those who are struggling, we become living examples of God's grace. It allows us to participate in fulfilling His mission to bring comfort to the afflicted (Isaiah 61:1-30). This act of generosity serves as a link between God's love and those who need it the most.

We can also use our wealth to glorify God by donating to the church. Supporting the church is more than just funding a building; it is about investing in Christ's very body (1 Corinthians 12:27). The church is an important place for developing faith, spreading the Gospel, and serving the community.  Our financial contributions become seeds, allowing the church to carry out its mission.

As Hebrews 10:25 reminds us, "Let us not neglect our meeting together, as is the habit of some, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching." By giving to the church, we not only enable these vital functions but also demonstrate our commitment to being part of a supportive and unified Christian community.

Finally, our wealth can be a powerful tool for sharing the hope of Christ. By supporting missions and evangelistic efforts, we actively participate in fulfilling this command.  Our resources can be used to send missionaries, translate and distribute Bibles, and fund initiatives that reach out to people who have yet to hear the Gospel.  In essence, we join God in expanding His kingdom and bringing the message of salvation to the world (Philippians 1:5). This investment has the potential to impact generations to come, leaving a legacy that extends far beyond our earthly lives.

It's important to remember that our wealth is temporary, as Proverbs 23:5 reminds us, "Do not wear yourself out to get rich; be wise enough to know when to stop."  We can't take it with us, but the impact it can have for eternity is everlasting. When we use our wealth in accordance with God's will, we not only glorify His name and fulfill His purpose for us, but we also have the joy of reflecting His generosity (Acts 20:35).  So let's be intentional about how we use or wealth, knowing that it's not about us, but about bringing honor and glory to the One who has blessed us abundantly.

Wishing you all the best,
Rumishael
