How often do we find ourselves looking at someone and making a quick judgment? Maybe it's a person struggling financially, or someone whose life seems to be falling apart. We might even find ourselves speaking ill of those who have passed away. But as Christians, we are called to a higher standard. A powerful truth reminds us: "Don't despise a living person, for God can change their destiny at any moment. And don't mock the dead, for you are headed down the very same road." This message invites us to rethink our attitudes and embrace a life guided by God's grace and unwavering love.
The Wisdom of Understanding is knowing that God Changes Seasons
The Bible is full of examples of how God changes people's destinies. Think about David, the young shepherd boy chosen by God to become the great king of Israel (1 Samuel 16:1-13). Could anyone have guessed that this humble youth would one day lead God’s nation? This reminds us that God sees beyond what we see (1 Samuel 16:7). We cannot know God’s purpose for every person's life.
We also remember Saul, a fierce persecutor of the early church, who was dramatically transformed into Paul, the great apostle to the Gentiles (Acts 9). His conversion was astonishing and shows God's power to change hearts and destinies.
Jesus himself taught us not to judge others. In Matthew 7:1-5, he says, "Do not judge, or you too will be judged." He warns us that the same measure we use to judge others will be used to judge us. Instead of despising, we should be compassionate and pray for others, believing that God can intervene and change their lives.
Judging others based on their current situations reflects a lack of wisdom. When we look at someone and see only their struggles, we miss the broader picture of their life, a picture that is still being painted. Everyone is in pursuit of their own growth and transformation, and we must trust that God has a plan for each individual that we might not yet understand.
To despise someone for their current circumstances is to overlook the potential for change that exists within them. Life is filled with unexpected twists, and today’s challenges may very well be the stepping stones to tomorrow’s victories. Instead of casting judgment, we should strive to extend grace and support to those around us.
Don't Mock the Dead, we are all in the Shared Path of Humanity
Another important aspect of our shared journey is the inevitability of death. None of us can predict what tomorrow will bring. We are all moving toward the same final destination, making it crucial to approach one another with kindness and respect. Mocking those who have passed or harboring resentment toward those who are alive only serves to diminish our own humanity.
The Bible constantly reminds us of the brevity of life and the certainty of death. Psalm 90:12 says, "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." Remembering those who have gone before us and realizing that we are all on the same path should humble us.
To mock the dead is to lack respect for a creation of God that has reached the end of its earthly journey. We do not know God’s final judgment on them. We can recall Jesus' words to the criminal who was crucified with him: "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43). Even in the final hour, God's grace can be at work.
The book of Ecclesiastes reminds us of the vanity of earthly life and that death is the end for all (Ecclesiastes 3:20). So, instead of mocking those who have passed, we should reflect on our own lives and ensure we live to glorify God and love our fellow human beings.
Therefore, let us embrace love and understanding. Every interaction is an opportunity to uplift, to help, and to foster a sense of community. By valuing others, regardless of their circumstances, we create a more compassionate world.
The Call to Love and Respect in The Great Commandment
Jesus taught us the two great commandments: to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39). These commandments include the call to live with love and respect for everyone, both the living and in the memory of those who have passed away.
The Apostle Paul urges us in Romans 12:10, "Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves." We are invited to give others the respect we would want for ourselves.
As we navigate our lives, let’s commit to a mindset of empathy. Recognize that everyone is fighting their battles, often unseen to the outside world. When faced with the urge to judge, take a moment to reflect on your own journey and the grace you have received.
Let’s choose to love, to help, and to respect one another. In doing so, we not only honor our shared humanity but also align ourselves with a higher purpose, one that truly reflects the heart of compassion and understanding.
Together, let’s build a community where judgment is replaced by kindness, and where every individual is valued for their unique journey. After all, we are all in this together, moving forward on paths that are both different and yet beautifully intertwined.
Living Out Humility
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to let these biblical truths remain just that—truths we know but don't live. But what if we made a conscious effort to apply them?
Here’s a simple challenge for us all:
- Practice the "Pause": The next time you feel the urge to judge someone or speak negatively, pause. Instead of a quick comment, offer a silent prayer for that person. Ask God to bless them and reveal their purpose to you, even if you don't know them personally. This small act can shift your heart from judgment to compassion.
- Recall Your Own Story: When you're tempted to despise someone's current situation, remember a time when you were struggling. Remind yourself that God brought you through it, and He can do the same for them. Your past struggles can be a source of empathy, not a reason for pride.
- Speak Words of Grace: Make it a point to speak words of encouragement and respect, especially for those who are no longer with us. When remembering a loved one or a public figure who has passed, focus on their positive contributions or the lessons their life taught you, rather than dwelling on their shortcomings. This honors their memory and helps you live with a grateful heart.
Closing thoughts
As Christians, we must be guided by the love of Christ in all our actions. Let's not despise anyone because of their current situation, and let's not mock anyone who has died. Instead, let's learn to love and respect one another at all times, recognizing that we are all weak creatures before a God of great power and mercy. Our time here on Earth is short, so let's use it to show Christ's love to all.
Exploring life, one thought at a time.
Yours dearly, Rumishael
