In the old days, when kings sought to avoid bloodshed, they would select a champion to fight on their behalf. It was a way to settle disputes without further casualties. A single combatant would stand forth, representing the might of an entire nation. This champion embodied the hopes and dreams of his people, stepping into the ring to secure victory without the desolation of widespread war. This concept extends beyond the realm of kings and battles, for in the realm of faith, we too engage in a constant struggle.
As Joshua declared, 'Choose this day whom you will serve' (Joshua 24:15), we are called to select a champion to fight for our souls. For me, the choice is clear: Christ stands as my warrior, wielding the shield of faith and the sword of righteousness in the face of spiritual opposition.
Why Christ? Unlike earthly champions who face the unknown, Christ has already won. He has vanquished sin, death, and all the forces that seek to oppose us (1 Corinthians 15:54-57). The battles may still rage around us, but Christ is our ultimate champion, the one who has overcome all obstacles. He is more than just a brave warrior; he is a proven victor who gives us the strength and hope we need to overcome any challenge (Hebrews 12:2).
In times of adversity and struggle, having a champion to rely on is essential. Christ is that unwavering presence, the one who fights for us when the weight of the world falls on us (Isaiah 41:10). His strength is unparalleled, and his love never ends (Psalm 18:28). Choosing Christ as my champion is not just a decision, but a recognition of His supremacy and the assurance that He will guide me through the trials of life (Romans 8:31). With Him by my side, I face the future with courage, knowing that even in the darkest valleys, His light will lead the way (Psalm 23:4).
When faced with difficult circumstances, it is natural to seek someone who can help us get through. Christ is the perfect champion, having already secured victory (John 16:33). His faithfulness and power are unwavering (Hebrews 13:8), and by aligning ourselves with Him, we can withstand adversity (Ephesians 6:10-18). Our champion must be carefully selected. It is a serious decision that will shape the course of our lives (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Consider Mother Teresa (1910-1997), a Catholic nun who spent her life serving the poor and sick in Calcutta, India. Mother Teresa fought an ongoing battle against poverty, illness, and despair. Nonetheless, her unwavering faith in God drove her compassion and determination. She saw Christ in the faces of the suffering and believed she was called to serve Him by helping them.
Mother Teresa did not rely on her own abilities or resources. She trusted Christ to lead her and provide for those she served. Mother Teresa, like the old champions, fought a battle, but it was not physical. Her battle was against suffering, which she couldn't win alone.
Just as the passage emphasizes Christ's predetermined victory, Mother Teresa's unwavering faith provided hope and comfort in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Choosing Christ was more than just a belief for Mother Teresa; it was a motivator that enabled her to make a significant difference in the lives of countless people.
So, I encourage you to reflect upon your own life and the battles you face. Who will you choose as your champion? The answer lies in Christ, the one who has already won the battle (Romans 8:37). Your choice matters greatly, for it determines the trajectory of your spiritual journey. Choose wisely, my friend, and find solace and strength in the champion who has already emerged victorious (Revelation 17:14).
Wishing you all the best in this endeavor,
Rumishael
