Put God First: The Key to Unlocking True Spiritual Maturity

Attaining spiritual maturity is a lifelong journey that requires a deliberate and intentional focus on seeking first the Kingdom of God. This fundamental step is emphasized by Jesus Himself when He said, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and the rest shall be added unto you" (Matthew 6:33). He also emphasized the importance of seeking the Kingdom of God above all else in Matthew 22:37-38, saying, ""You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment." Loving God wholeheartedly entails dedicating ourselves to seeking Him in every aspect of our lives.

Seeking God Above All Else: Lessons from Kings and Leaders

To illustrate the significance of seeking God above all else, let us consider the example of King Solomon. When allowed to ask for anything, Solomon chose God's wisdom to guide him in leading God's people. In 1 Kings 3:9, Solomon humbly prays, "Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people that I may discern between good and evil..." Solomon recognized the immeasurable value of God's wisdom, understanding that without it, we are nothing. Despite his immense wealth and influence, he understood that true prosperity and success come from seeking God first.

Similarly, Joshua, in Joshua 24:15, urged the Israelites to choose whom they would serve. He declared, "But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." Joshua's commitment to serving God demonstrates the core essence of spiritual maturity—to prioritize God's Kingdom above all else. As Christians, our call to spiritual maturity echoes this sentiment, as we are invited to seek God's Kingdom wholeheartedly, knowing that in doing so, we will experience His abundant blessings and provisions.

When we seek the Kingdom of God first, we acknowledge that God is the source of all blessings and provisions. In Psalm 37:4, it is written, "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." This verse doesn't promise that God will fulfill all our selfish desires, but rather that He will shape and align our desires with His perfect will as we delight in Him. Our deepest longings and aspirations become rooted in pursuing His Kingdom and bringing glory to His name.

Beyond the Prosperity Gospel: A Deeper Understanding

In our modern times, the true purpose of spiritual maturity has become muddled and obscured by various influences. One such influence is the prosperity gospel, a belief system that emphasizes material wealth and success as signs of God's favor. This distorted interpretation of Christianity often leads people to prioritize earthly riches over seeking a genuine and personal relationship with God.

The allure of the prosperity gospel lies in its promise of instant gratification and quick solutions to life's challenges. It appeals to our natural human desires for comfort, security, and abundance. Individuals are drawn to this message because they see it as a means to achieve their personal goals and fulfill their earthly aspirations. However, this approach reflects a shallow understanding of true spiritual maturity.

True spiritual maturity goes beyond the pursuit of temporal blessings and encompasses a holistic transformation of the heart, mind, and character. It involves surrendering our own desires and aligning them with God's will. Philippians 2:5 urges us to have the same mindset as Christ, who humbled Himself and obediently submitted to the Father's plan. Spiritual maturity is not about seeking personal gain or the fulfillment of selfish desires, but rather about conforming to the image of Christ and living in obedience to God's commands.

Examples of Unwavering Faith

Genuine spiritual maturity requires us to recognize the supremacy of God in our lives, regardless of our circumstances. We are called to seek His Kingdom first, desiring that He makes His dwelling place in our hearts. The examples of biblical figures like Daniel, Job, and the apostles inspire us to place God above everything else.

In the face of great opposition, Daniel remained faithful to God and prioritized Him above the pressures of the world. When Daniel was prohibited from praying to anyone but King Darius, he did not compromise his devotion to God. Instead, he continued to pray to God three times a day, risking his life for the sake of his faith (Daniel 6:10-11). Daniel's unwavering commitment to seek God and obey His commands serves as a powerful example of spiritual maturity in the midst of adversity.

Similarly, Job's story demonstrates extraordinary faith and trust in God, even in the face of immense suffering and loss. Despite losing his children, his possessions, and even his health, Job declared, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord" (Job 1:21). Job's steadfastness and refusal to curse God in the midst of his trials reveal his deep-rooted faith and unwavering commitment to seek God above all else.

The apostles, driven by their desire to testify to the Kingdom of God, endured various trials and persecution. In Acts 5:41, after being flogged for proclaiming the name of Jesus, the apostles rejoiced, "And they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name." Their unwavering dedication to seeking God's Kingdom and spreading the Gospel, despite the hardships they faced, exemplifies true spiritual maturity.

These examples from Scripture encourage and inspire us to follow their lead by prioritizing God above all else. Jesus Himself emphasized the importance of seeking God's Kingdom in Matthew 6:31-33, saying, "Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'... But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." This verse reminds us that when we prioritize God and His Kingdom, He takes care of our needs.

Encountering God on the Path to Maturity

To encounter God in our journey toward spiritual maturity, we must actively engage in various means of seeking Him:

We encounter God in His word when we diligently read, study, and meditate on the Scriptures. The Bible is not merely a collection of stories and teachings; it is a living testament of God's character and His desire for a relationship with us. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, it is written, "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." The Word of God serves as a guide for our lives, leading us closer to Him and shaping our understanding of His will.

We encounter God through heartfelt prayers and supplications. Prayer is a powerful avenue through which we communicate with our Heavenly Father, seeking His guidance, wisdom, and strength. In Matthew 7:7-8, Jesus instructs us, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened." Through prayer, we invite God's presence into our lives, express our dependence on Him, and experience His transformative power.

We encounter God through our relationships with others who bear His image. As we interact with fellow believers, we have the opportunity to experience the love, grace, and truth of God manifesting through them. In John 13:34-35, Jesus says, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this, all people will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another." When we engage in genuine and loving relationships within the body of Christ, we witness God's character reflected in the lives of others and grow in our understanding of His love.

We encounter God through worship and praise. Worship is an expression of our reverence, adoration, and gratitude towards God. In Psalm 95:1-2, it says, "Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!" Through worship, we draw near to God, acknowledging His greatness and surrendering ourselves to His lordship.

In our pursuit of spiritual maturity, actively engaging in these means of seeking God allows us to encounter Him in deeper and more profound ways. As we immerse ourselves in His Word, communicate with Him through prayer, engage in meaningful relationships, and offer Him our heartfelt worship, we open ourselves to the transformative work of His Spirit. May we continually seek God through these avenues, knowing that He eagerly desires to reveal Himself to those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).

Seeking God First: A Transformative Journey

In conclusion, seeking the Kingdom of God is the first step toward spiritual maturity. When God is at the center of our lives, everything else falls into place. By following the examples of biblical figures, understanding the true purpose of seeking God, and engaging in meaningful encounters with Him, we can embark on a transformative journey of spiritual growth and maturity.

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus emphasized the importance of seeking God's Kingdom, saying, "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and everything else will be added to you." This verse reassures us that when we prioritize God and His Kingdom, He will meet our needs.

Psalm 34:10 states, “The young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing." When we seek God earnestly, we can be confident that He will provide everything we need in accordance with His perfect plan and timing.

Proverbs 8:17 reminds us of the reward for those who diligently seek God: "I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me." When we sincerely seek a relationship with God, He reveals Himself to us in profound and meaningful ways.

Furthermore, Jeremiah 29:13 encourages us with these words: "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." God invites us to seek Him with sincerity and wholeheartedness. As we do so, He promises that we will find Him and experience the richness of His presence and guidance.

Let us, therefore, prioritize God above all else and believe that as we seek Him first, His blessings will flow abundantly into our lives. May we continue to seek His Kingdom, righteousness, and will, knowing that true spiritual maturity and fulfillment come from a deep and intimate relationship with Him. As we travel down this path, may His grace and guidance lead us to spiritual maturity and a life filled with His love, joy, and peace.

Because of His love on Calvary, I am forever a secured package,
